Carl Maryland, the father of veteran OBSERVER photographer Robert Maryland, passed away peacefully April 28 after a long battle with dementia.
Maryland, 84, was a resident of Elk Grove. He was a former shortstop who almost went pro in the 1960s and later traveled the country playing softball. He is remembered for his time spent in senior baseball and winning several championship rings, of which he was immensely proud. Maryland was previously a resident of a local senior living community where he was popular and known for helping others. He was cared for in his later years by his son Robert, who regularly chronicled his fatherโs storied baseball history through photographs.
A memorial service will be held in late summer or early fall. For more information on the service or where to send flowers and cards, email rmaryland58@gmail.com.
