- Heat the Streets: Items of Warmth Donation – 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesdays-Fridays and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturdays, Nov. 5-Dec. 25, at World Class Faders, 3432 Third Ave. Join the United Barbers Club in donating items of warmth – specifically socks, sweaters, coats, beanies and umbrellas – to the Sacramento community this Thanksgiving and Christmas. - James C. Dodd, FAIA, NOMA: Sacramento Projects Tour – 2:30-4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, at Lionakis, 2025 19th St. Sacramento’s first African American architect, James C. Dodd, worked in the city for more than 40 years and designed several significant buildings such as McClellan Air Force Base remodels, St. HOPE Academy, Netta Sparks Women’s Civic Improvement Club and more. Please join this wonderful opportunity to experience part of James Dodd’s rich legacy by touring Sacramento Black Chamber of Commerce, St. HOPE Sac High and Shiloh Baptist Church. - Disparity Study – 10 a.m.-noon Wednesday, Nov. 6, at the Department of General Services Ziggurat Building, West Sacramento. The study will analyze the contracting practices of the state of California and determine if the subject businesses – certified small businesses and those owned by minorities, women, LGBTQ+, and disabled veterans – have equal access to contracting opportunities. The analysis will determine the state’s utilization of subject businesses on state contracts from July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2023. Free, attendees must register.
- Anna J. Cooper Lecture at Sac State: Study Abroad Brazil Presentation – Noon-1:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, at Sacramento State. The Cooper-Woodson College Enhancement Program was founded in 1990 as an educational equity, Pan African student retention program through the leadership of Dr. Otis Scott, Chris Glen and David Covin. The name is a tribute to the legendary legacies of Anna Julia Cooper and Carter G. Woodson. The founders formulated the theoretical framework of the program based on the principles of leadership, scholarship and service. - An Evening of Comedy with W. Kamau Bell – 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, at UC Davis, Mondavi Center, Jackson Hall. W. Kamau Bell returns to the world of stand-up, bringing his talent for “finding the comic absurdity in darkness” (Time magazine). Bell’s CNN docuseries “United Shades of America” won five Emmys, and he was awarded a Peabody for his docuseries “We Need to Talk About Cosby.” The list of accolades only continues to grow with his second book, “Do the Work: An Antiracism Activity Book,” making the New York Times bestseller list and his second comedy special, “Private School Negro,” currently available on Netflix. - The Level Up Youth Mental Wellness Conference – 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 9-10, at Estate Farms, 6240 Excelsior Road. The conference is a transformative, free event designed to empower youth and adults with tools to support mental wellness, build resilience and develop coping skills. Expect interactive workshops, expert panels, peer support and peer-led panels, parent and teacher sessions, and a resource fair. Free, attendees must register.
