Researchers on the faculty at San Diego State University are conducting a study to examine parents’ perceptions and interactions with educators in early childhood education settings.
Idara Essien, PhD and J. Luke Wood, PhD, a married couple, is looking for parents who have Black children enrolled in preschool, kindergarten, first grade, second grade, and third grade.
“We have a survey that has been developed to understand three common types of challenges that Black child face in education (e.g., criminalization, treated as lesser than, assumptions of academic inferiority).”
To participate in this study, participants must meet the following criteria: 1. Be parents of children who are currently enrolled in preschool through third grade 2. Have children in these grades who are of African American/Black descent 3. Have a willingness to share about their experiences and that of their children with racial issues in these settings; and 4 Be at least 18 years of age.
“If you fit these criteria, please participate. If you know of someone who does, please forward this to them.”

Dr. Essien and Dr. Wood’s research and advocacy focus on supporting Black students in education, from preschool to community college. They have been married for 12 years and have three children of their own, two of whom are currently enrolled in early childhood education.
Dr. Wood visited Sacramento in July 2018, for a discussion hosted by the Sacramento NAACP on the “Capitol of Suspensions: Examining The Racial Exclusions of Black Males in Sacramento County” report it commissioned.
